Canberra to issue National ID

6 July, 2024 upava Comments Off on Canberra to issue National ID

The Uganda High Commission in Canberra has started a process of issuing and renewing National Identity Cards (NICs) after the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) trained staff and also provided the necessary machinery to ease the process.

This was one of the promises made by  NIRA Executive Director Rosemary Kisembo when her team held a meeting with the Ugandan community living in Australia and New Zealand.

The meeting, organised by the UPAVA leadership, heard many persons faulting the process of renewing or applying for NICs which were not only cumbersome but ineffective.

The process required someone to travel from Australia to Kampala to have their biometrics recorded, yet technology has eased the process.

NIRA promised that they would find a way of getting all the required personnel trained and machines sent through to the Uganda High Commission in Canberra so that Ugandans in Australia and New Zealand can be able to apply for or renew their national ID with ease.

“This is exceptionally good for our community. It is good that NIRA has kept its promise. We are now requesting Ugandans to utilise the service. We are hoping that this is the first step to getting passports here,” said Dan Kisumbi, the vice president of  UPAVA.

Details of how to access the services are in the High Commission release below.
