Celebrating culture in style

6 July, 2024 upava Comments Off on Celebrating culture in style

The Ugandan community in Victoria celebrated their cultural day in style at St Theresa Primary School in Albion, recently.

The event, which was facilitated by the Victorian Multicultural Commission VMC, was aimed at promoting Ugandan culture to the wider Australian community and also to the new generation and involved a showcasing of Uganda’s dressing, food, dance, and traditional games, among others.

Youngsters who are learning Luganda, a local language of the Buganda Kingdom in Uganda, also showcased their talents by singing “Ekitiibwa Kya Buganda,” the Kingdom’s anthem. They also showcased sports workshops which climaxed with the sharing a meal.

“You could see how excited the kids were after making chapattis. They were moving around with their chapatis asking tasters to judge who had been rolled well and tasted better. It was good,” said Dan Kisumbi, UPAVA vice president, whose kids participated in the cooking workshop.

There was also entertainment from other players including Kofi Kunkpe, whose drums cut across all the divide, as they participated through drumming and dancing, an amazing scene of children challenging parents.

“This is new and very interactive. It’s participatory and was so much engaging,” said Ruth Nakyanzi on the beehive of activities that also included Face painting and Ugandan entrepreneurs showcasing their products.
